Welcome to the SERENOA PROJECT

This project has received funding from the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme under grant agreement nº 258030 (FP7-ICT-2009-5. Internet of Services, Software and Virtualization – STREP).

Serenoa is aimed at developing a novel, open platform for enabling the creation of context-sensitive service front-ends (SFEs). From the point of view of Serenoa, a context-sensitive SFE provides a user interface (UI) that exhibits some capability to be aware of the context and to react to changes of this context in a continuous way. As a result such a UI will be adapted to a person’s devices, tasks, preferences, and abilities, thus improving people’s satisfaction and performance compared to traditional SFEs based on manually designed UIs.

Serenoa will perform automatic adaptation of UIs involving the end user in two major ways: users can intervene in the adaptation (e.g. by controlling, suggesting, accepting/rejecting adaptations, requesting better adaptations) and the system can learn from users (e.g., by observation, by sensing, by machine learning). The final aim is to support humans in a more effective, personalized and consistent way, thus improving the quality of life for European citizens. In this scenario, we envisage Serenoa as the open source reference implementation of a SFE adaptation platform for the ‘Future Internet’.…

Serenoa Events

On June 24th, from 9a.m. to 1p.m., the 2nd Serenoa workshop will take place in London, CASFE’2023 will be co-located with EICS (the fifth ACM SIGCHI Symposium on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems). The agenda for the presentations has already been defined, and it is available online. The participants of this workshop are also invited to attend a tutorial about Creativity and Agile development that will take place on Monday evening.

Also on June 24th (Monday), the third Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting of Serenoa project will take place. This event joins participants of the project and external practitioners. The IAB meeting targets at the main exploitation actions for the Serenoa project.

On June 25th and 26th, Serenoa partners will meet in London for a consortium meeting, the goal is to synchronize their works and also to plan the last phases of the project before the final review meeting.…

CASFE’2013 Workshop Context-Aware Adaptation of Service Front-Ends (CASFE’2013)

Engineering interactive systems that are aware of the characteristics and constraints of the context of the user becomes challenging when several user’s profiles, platforms and environments are considered. In this sense the adaptation of user interfaces raises as an important approach for stakeholders aiming at implementing and providing systems whose user interfaces are usable, regardless of their context of use. In 2012 during the first CASFE workshop we discussed potential models, frameworks and practical applications that aim at supporting, facilitating and improving the development of adaptive and adaptable systems. CASFE’2013 aims at joining experts in the domain of context-aware adaptation in order to present and discuss its state-of -the-art.
Organization

Francisco Javier Caminero Gil is the project coordinator of the FP7-ICT5-SERENOA (Multidimensional context-aware adaptation of Service Front-ends) project funded by the European Commission.

Fabio Paternò is Research Director at CNR-ISTI, where he leads the HIIS laboratory, and Co-Chair for the Ambient Intelligence Conference 2012. He is also the chair of the IFIP Working Gorup on User Interface Engineering.

Vivian Genaro Motti is a PhD candidate at Université catholique de Louvain, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. She works as a research assistant for Serenoa project and collaborates in the W3C working group for model-based user interfaces.
Format

The workshop will last half day (Monday morning) dedicated to discuss and review the state-of-the-art in the area of context-aware adaptation: a design space for context-aware adaptation of user interfaces, criteria and requirements for Adaptation Specification Languages (ASL), common formats for expressing adaptation rules, etc. Selected papers will be presented, resulting into an updated and accurate version of the workshop material. A video projector will be used for presentations.
Date

The CASFE’2013 workshop will be held on June 24th, 2013 (Monday morning).
Participants

Participants are welcome from any background or discipline that is concerned by context-aware adaptation ranging from psychology, social sciences to computer science. The expected amount of participants will be around 15, but it can be extended depending on the interest of the topic. We will also accept attendees who have not submitted any work to the workshop provided that they have already worked in this domain (e.g., based on publications or implemented products or services).
Paper Submission

The submissions include: short papers describing initial results, ongoing work, and innovative proposals, up to 4 pages; and long papers describing conclusive results, up to 8 pages.

Important dates:

Submissions: April 8th Extended to April 29th
Notifications: April 29th May 6th
Camera Ready Versions: May 13th June 3rd
CASFE’2013 workshop at EICS 2013: June 24th (morning)

A preliminary version of the CASFE’2013 agenda is available.

The 2nd Serenoa Workshop on Context-aware Service Front End will take place in June 24th (Monday morning). CASFE’2013 will be co-located with EICS this year in London – UK.

CASFE’2012 Workshop Context-Aware Adaptation of Service Front-Ends (CASFE’2012)

Ambient intelligence implies the need for context-aware adaptation of user interfaces. This adaptation with respect to the context of use is applicable to a wide spectrum of interactive applications ranging from front ends of web services, information systems to multimedia and multimodal applications. Although the ultimate goal of this adaptation is always for the ultimate benefit of the end user, many approaches and techniques have been used to various degrees of experience and maturity that effectively and efficiently support context-aware adaptation. This workshop is intended to review the state of the art in this domain, while looking at a broad range of applications, to discuss positive and negative experiences of context-aware adaptation, and to come up with criteria and requirements for driving such adaptation.

Jean Vanderdonckt is Professor of Computer Science at Université catholique de Louvain where he leads the Louvain Interaction Laboratory (LILab). He has been (Co-)Chair of ACM IUI’2004, ACM EICS’2010 and ACM IUI’2012.
Format

The workshop will be a half day workshop that will result into discussing and reviewing the state of the art in the area of context-aware adaptation: a design space for context-aware adaptation of user interfaces, criteria and requirement for an Adaptation Specification Language (ASL), and a common format for expressing such adaptation rules. For this purpose, accepted participants will be required to use a preliminary version of this material in order to locate their work. Some selected papers will be presented, while others will be discussed, thus resulting into an updated and more accurate version of the workshop material. A video projector will be used.
